New Borderlands 2 trailer studied & unravelled |
 Thursday, 23 February 2012
Back in 2009 I must admit I didn’t have high hopes for Gearbox Software’s Borderlands, however it surprised a lot of people and ended up winning many game of the year accolades – recently a new trailer hit YouTube for Borderlands 2 and now that we’ve had time to watch it and investigate it in detail we thought we would share some interesting information with you.
The trailer has been embedded at the bottom of this post and some of what’s revealed isn’t subtle, so let’s get that information out the way first. Perhaps the most exciting thing we see is the September 18 release date, however we’re also delighted to see that the game will allow 4-player co-op (we presume over Xbox Live, PSN & Steam) and also split-screen functionality – Gearbox also state that the game’s campaign will be epic (we presume more so than last time around) and say that there are more weapons than ever – 870 gajillion more, to be exact!
At various times during the trailer we get to an impression of what to expect visually and who you will be facing, having played the original game extensively it would be fair to say that the enemies were pretty formidable, but this time around it really does look like you have your work cut out. Don’t believe us? Check out the screenshot below! As for visuals Gearbox has once-again adopted the cartoon-like graphic effect, this makes it quite hard to judge whether it looks a great deal better than the original – *what do you think?*
In the video you get to see the familiar silhouette of Mordecai, but you won’t play as him in this game, in fact you won’t be able to play as Brick, Lillith or Roland either – instead you must choose between Salvador, Maya, Axton and Zero. No-matter who you play as you’ll be battling it out on the familiar planet of Pandora against Handsome Jack, just like in the first game you’ll meet plenty of people on your journey who have quests for you to fulfil.
The video also introduces us to Moxxi (a character who showed up in Borderlands’ The Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC), her son Scooter (the guy who’ll fix you up with vehicles) and Tiny Tina – we know next to nothing about Tina, except for the fact she hates bandits.
Below you can see a screenshot from the video which shows Handsome Jack and his ‘H’ shaped base on the moon, from this base he can launch crates and robots for reinforcements. These launched objects will damage whatever they hit upon impact and we’re also told that Handsome Jack has a strong satellite to allow him to watch things very closely. You can find out a little more about Handsome Jack over at the Borderlands Wikia.
Something else we spotted in the video was a four-person vehicle, we don’t yet know what this is called, however it has one driver seat, one gunner and two positions where you can stand and use your standard weapons. The video also gives us a quick glimpse at the game’s inventory system and the different paths you can take when spending skill points to customize your character. Check out the screenshot below.
Before we leave you let us just tell you briefly about some other things we spotted, firstly there’s a new elemental effect for weapons called slag, when hit with this an enemy will become coated and more susceptible to other effects. Something else we’re told is that this time round weapons will have brands and along your journey you will learn what brand suites your particular needs.
Towards the end of the video we get a brief glimpse of your mechanical friend Claptrap, also we’re promised that this game is ’96.5% MORE WUB WUB’ and ’1,000 DEGREES HOTTER’ – we are left with the following words:
PANDORA’S CHANGED, ARE YOU READY?
We certainly are!
This looks like potential game of the year material to us – what do you think? Remember you can watch the trailer below, or alternatively head over to IGN where the video is dissected completely.
