Sony may not be willing to talk about their next generation PlayStation console as they are just ‘hitting their stride’ with the PS3 as Jack Tretton recently said, but that hasn’t stopped whispers from appearing this week and we have a particularly interesting report to share with you now.
First of all, let us remind you of an article we wrote back in July of 2011 which first mentioned the possibility of both the Sony PS4 and Microsoft’s next Xbox console using AMD graphics for future consoles. At the time, a lot of you were skeptical about this since it would mean that Sony would be making a change after using an NVIDIA graphics chipset for the PS3.
However, Forbes has published an article this week again reiterating the fact that AMD may be delivering the graphics for the next PlayStation and that the information for this has allegedly come from former AMD staff who could have been working on the project.
With next generation consoles just around the corner it seems, it’s safe to assume that both consoles are already well into the development process by Sony and Microsoft, but could we see an interesting scenario for the first time where both consoles utilize the exact same graphics? We have now had two decent reports on AMD graphics being used for the PS4, but at the moment the graphics talk on the Xbox ’720′ has remained muted for now.
The Xbox 360 features a 500 MHz ATI Xenos GPU, so will Microsoft extend their partnership with ATI and include an upgraded model of this for the next console? With NVIDIA developing exciting processors such as the quad-core Tegra 3 chip for mobile devices though, we could see Microsoft go the other way and opt for NVIDIA this time around.
One positive aspect of using AMD graphics for both next generation consoles could come down to costs. Most of you will agree that AMD cards are generally cheaper than NVIDIA products and they basically offer the same level of performance as well. We have just seen Sony release their PS Vita at a reasonable hardware price, so perhaps they will be looking to repeat this strategy and keep the costs down for the Sony PS4 too. One thing that we don’t want to see though is another proprietary war where Sony will drive up the cost for consumers by keeping hardware reasonably priced, but forcing gamers to pick up mandatory extras to play the device like we’ve seen with the expensive memory cards.
If Sony does end up using AMD graphics for the PS4, would you be happy with this or are you a big fan of NVIDIA?
