No Thanks, Mr. President - The Simpsonsby

“The Simpsons” turned down President Trump for a guest appearance on the series --

They often say that getting a cameo on The Simpsons means you’ve made it. After all, the Springfield fivesome and their equally bizarre neighbors have been part of our TV schedules and popular culture for three decades now. Guest spots on the show weren’t prevalent initially, but once the series started getting serious attention, a number of huge names queued up to put their names on the bill – and their voices to a yellow, cartoonified version of themselves. Among the first of these in early seasons included Michael Jackson and Dustin Hoffman, albeit under pseudonyms – and anyone following the show for the past fifteen or so years will know that an episode these days without a celebrity guest star is a very rare one indeed – whether they’re appearing as themselves, or a one-off character. With Ed Sheeran being the latest star to clinch a spot in Springfield after his stint on Game of Thrones, who’s next?

We know who isn’t – US President Donald Trump. While The Simpsons may have featured a caricature of the Commander in Chief in previous episodes – and while they may have outright predicted the real estate mogul becoming President in an episode as far back as 2000 – it seems that any chance of The Donald visiting Springfield legitimately are certainly not on the cards right now. Speaking to a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, long-running executive producer Al Jean alluded to the President having had a request to guest on the show rejected – in response to a question regarding who, if anyone, had faced such rejection in the past. Jean responded, “Let’s just say he’s the President of the United States.”

Whether this means a meeting between Trump and the show staff never took place – or if it means that the show had rebuffed him many years prior – remains unclear. The show has since lampooned the President a number of times, and Trump has opposed such lampooning on shows such as Saturday Night Live in recent months, particularly during his election campaign – meaning he may not be so keen to lend his voice these days. Certainly, with drama surrounding the exit of Anthony Scaramucci and ongoing investigations into alleged communications with Russian officials, it seems that President Trump may have more than a little on his plate to contend with right now.

The Simpsons has been on air long enough to see six different US Presidents take office – will they stick around for a seventh – and will they be allowed a guest slot?
