News video: CDC Study Reveals That Nearly 40 Percent Of U.S. Adults Are Now ObeseAccording to a new report from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly forty percent of adults in the United States are now obese, raising concerns that the ever-expanding obesity epidemic will lead to sicker Americans and higher health care costs. Almost four out of ten adults and 18.5 kids between the ages of two and nineteen now meet the clinical definition of obesity. Public health experts have expressed concerns that the continuing rise in obesity will lead to greater numbers of people suffering from diabetes, heart disease and other chronic illnesses. Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, chief medical officer for the American Heart Association, said, "We've made tremendous progress reducing deaths due to cardiovascular disease and stroke in our country. But we've worried if obesity trends stayed or worsened that some of those gains might be reduced."
