in a bitter custody battle between two in a bitter custody battle between two families. anna mae he opens up about the bright possibilities for her future. anna mae's amazing journey continues" katina: few children ... have stolen as many hearts in the mid- south as anna mae he did ... when she was growing up. richard: at the age of eight, when she moved to china after a long custody battle .. most mid- southerners didn't expect they'd ever hear from her again. little did they know anna mae's amazing journey would mean coming back to memphis her freshman year in high school.. she's about to graduate from germantown high's i-b program last night.. we showed you how she feels about that tumultuous time... tonight.. a local 24 news exclusive.. how this young lady.. who's called anna now... is looking to the future.. after dealing with some difficult and very public family drama. richard ransom reporting: when the bakers of cordova adopted anna mae he .. they thought they were doing a good deed. helping a chinese couple attending the u of m on student visas who could not afford the health care of their baby.. born prematurely. but it quickly became an ugly custody battle. at the time, anna's father jack he was often critical of the bakers. jack he/anna's biological father says: "we now know the bakers are no different than kidnappers." the bakers ultimately lost..the adoption papers were not air tight. jack he/anna's biological father says: "justice prevails. justice prevails." a court order led to this heart- wrenching video played around the world when anna was forced to leave the family who raised her from infancy ...to "toddler"..... to "straight a student." nat pop of louise baker/ anna's 'mom' "mommy loves you very much. don't ever forget that." the he's left for china as a family reunited in 2008.. parting memphis international for beijing.. but only two months later.. jack he.. abandoned his family. there was a nasty divorce. and when anna got to high school age.. came a huge twist of fate. her birth mother, casey.. wanted anna to go to school in the u-s.. and called the bakers to see if they'd take her in.. casey he/anna's mother "if kids are happy. i'm happy too." richard ransom asks: "how are your thoughts about graduating from high school? um.. at the beginning of the year, i really did not want to graduate." whatever nervousness anna had about graduating.. she's over it now... including talking about her past.. something she's been so reluctant to do, she's never even googled her name. she realizes... anna he/ age 18: "remembering something from my past is inevitable. it's part of me and i should embrace the truth about myself." that also includes frank talk about her estranged father.. who she usually only hears from when he's asking for pictures. anna he/age 18 "he just posts pictures of me but doesn't try to make an effort to actually make contact with me. like when it was christmas or my birthday, he won't even budge to buy me a gift or even call me." it obviously hurts.. but anna is not one to dwell on the past. she's focused on college essays now.. campus visits.. and a career. anna he/age 18: "since i've been traveling a lot, i really, really want to be an american ambassador." louise baker/anna's 'mom' "it's really a miracle, the way things worked out." louise and jerry baker are fully aware of the irony that anna is with them now.. and couldn't be more proud of her. jerry baker/ anna's 'dad' "you asked earlier if there was any regrets. there is no regrets. anna has turned into an amazing young lady. speaks three languages and just a delightful person." they and anna can now look at the past and say things happened for a reason. anna he/ age 18 "after all i've gone through i can pick myself up and laugh about what's happened. well, smile. not laugh." richard: for her college applications.. anna has written a college essay.. the first time she's ever shared with anyone her thoughts about her childhood. we've posted a link so you can read it for yourself at local memphis-dot- com. katina: where does she want to go to college? richard: new york. she's looking at n-y-u, columbia, fordham and st. lawrence. no doubt she'll be successful no matter where she ends up. richard:
