Harold Shipman: English doctor and serial killer
Harold Frederick Shipman, known to acquaintances as Fred Shipman, was an British general practitioner who is believed to be the most prolific serial killer in modern history. On 31 January 2000, a jury found Shipman guilty of the murder of fifteen patients under his care, with his total number of victims estimated to be around 250. Shipman was sentenced to life imprisonment with the recommendation that he never be released. He committed suicide on 13 January 2004, one day before his 58th birthday, by hanging himself in his cell at Wakefield Prison.
