And Another 90s Show Gets Rebooted! Time to Return to Sunnydaleby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

It seems that the 80s and 90s are two particular decades which inspire a ton of reboots and remakes – we’ve only just started getting adjusted to the fact that a new raft of Rugrats episodes – as well as a movie – are headed our way very soon, and now it seems that another TV favorite from the latter half of the decade is going to be getting a new lease of life. This time, however, it’s a different type of show altogether – and it’s getting completely remade.

The show in question is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, arguably the breakout role for Sarah Michelle Gellar – which ran from 1997 to 2003, a total of seven seasons. The show surrounded the demon-busting talents of Buffy and her friends in a town which, to the naked eye, seems perfectly pleasant – only, it’s always plagued by the likes of vampires, living abominations and more besides. To say it remains a cult favorite is putting it mildly indeed!

However, fans could well be split with regard to news that a completely recast and re-imagined Buffy is set to head to our screens sometime in the near future – should a network or streaming provider pick it up, in any regard. 20th Century Fox are reportedly getting ready to sell the show, with Monica Owusu-Breen acting as potential showrunner, having written the pilot. Buffy head honcho Joss Whedon is on board to executive produce, and interestingly, the lead character has been rewritten as specifically black – a move which could make for an entirely new kind of Buffy from what we’ve expected in years gone by.

The original Buffy series – itself based on a movie of the same name from the early 90s – remains a huge draw for fans at comic conventions and the like – so it will remain to be seen quite how well this re-imagining will go down. Let’s keep our fingers crossed it’s a winner – we’re nowhere near clear on whether or not a network will pick up the show as yet, but with revivals being very much in vogue right now, it’s hard to see why this one would be left to dwindle. Sharpen your stakes and freshen up with the old garlic – we could well be heading back to Sunnydale very soon indeed. Time to crack open the old DVD box sets in preparation, perhaps!
