Will Season 11 of the X-Files Be the Last?

Will Season 11 of the X-Files Be the Last?by

FBI Agents Mulder and Scully have, on-and-off, been some of the most important characters in US popular culture since the early 1990s. While The X-Files came to an initial end some time ago, movie revivals and a recent complete return run for the show has reignited fan interest in the search for ‘the truth’ – as each and every episode opens up a new mystery and potentially paranormal investigation. Deep, dark and often far too clever for its own good, this is a show which has certainly had its ups and downs – and with news that Scully herself, Gillian Anderson, wouldn’t be returning to the franchise in the interest of pursuing other projects, things were left rather open-ended for fans. After all, David Duchovny’s initial departure as Mulder in the original run hardly inspired further episodes – and fans are starting to worry that history may repeat itself.

Creator Chris Carter has advised recently on Reddit that doing the show without Anderson “…isn’t ever something (I’ve) had to consider” – a slightly worrying note for those who may well be anticipating a twelfth season of FBI activity. Further to this, Mulder and Scully have long been the lifeblood of the show – while it obviously pulls in viewers with its unique stories, it’s the central story and chemistry between these two often polarized characters that has made the show so watchable for so long. What might put some fans at ease is that Fox, the network currently hosting The X-Files, has no plans that anyone is aware of to cancel the show completely. However, Dana Walden of the Fox Television Group has asserted that “It seems like if those are the circumstances, there won’t be any more X-Files”. This is in reference to whether or not Carter would wish to persist with the series.

Fans shouldn’t worry too much – this is a series that has survived everything that has come before it, and while its return run may not have received the critical plaudits it pulled in at its peak, there is enough interest in, and money behind the franchise to warrant its continuation. Whether or not this will spur Christ Carter on to pursue a twelfth run will remain to be seen – but, as they say, the truth is out there. Stay tuned and we’ll let you know of any drastic movements from behind the scenes!
