The colossal Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU, is set to expand even further this year with three new additions to the line-up, with both Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and The Wasp due for release later on in 2018 – for now, however, comic book movie buffs appear to be solidly buzzing about this month’s biggest release, the hotly-anticipated Black Panther. The movie, which boasts the first predominantly black cast in Marvel’s line-up of comic adaptations, has already received high praise following its premiere – and it looks set to convert even more fans as critic reviews start pouring in and start filling up that all-important Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer.

The Tomatometer is a popular online tool used to gauge just how critical opinion has swung with regard to recent movies (and some classic ones, too) – a percentage score is given to show how many authorized critics gave positive reviews of a film in question, meaning that the remainder will obviously account for negative scoring. The Tomatometer can sometimes make or break a movie – look at the furore caused last summer when The Emoji Movie coasted on 0% for so long – and for those that score very highly, it’s a case of being placed in a very hallowed hall of fame. Only four movies have ever achieved 100% on the Tomatometer, among them Toy Story 2 and Paddington 2.
Black Panther may not be on goal for 100%, but it does seem to be holding strong as the most celebrated movie in Marvel’s run so far. Iron Man (2008) still holds the title until all reviews for the latest picture are collated, with an impressive 94% approval rating – but Black Panther looks to be holding steady at the time of writing with 97%. This, of course, could be set to change – though it is highly unlikely it will fall much lower, meaning that it has earned its place within a hallowed few movies that both critics and audiences adore in the Marvel line.

Rotten Tomatoes’ general consensus is already glowing. “Black Panther elevates superhero cinema to thrilling new heights,” they advise, “while telling one of the MCU’s most absorbing stories – and introducing some of its most fully realized characters.” High praise indeed – but how will we at One News Page rate the movie? Find out in just a few days – and go see it for yourself, too!
