Black Panther Just Broke a Ton of Box Office Records

Black Panther Just Broke a Ton of Box Office Recordsby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

As well as being lauded as one of the finest Marvel movies to hit the big screen, the recent release of Black Panther – starring Chadwick Boseman and Lupita Nyong’o – seems to be doing plenty of business on a financial and record-breaking front, too. The movie has been almost unanimously critically lauded, with some sources even suggesting that it might not just be the best Marvel movie rated on Rotten Tomatoes, but also the best superhero movie full stop. The movie has earned praise for its incredible visual direction, its important messages and incredible stunt work – putting Marvel and Disney, the parent brand, on target for another amazing year at the movies.

Black Panther has already been busting records wide open – and with good reason. Beyond the confines of Rotten Tomatoes and general critical opinion, its box office figures are scaling higher and higher – it’s officially had the biggest opening weekend for a solo hero movie full stop, with a colossal $242 million expected to be totalled from its initial Friday to Monday release. It’s also the biggest box office draw for any movie that isn’t a sequel – beating out other entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the likes of The Hunger Game in the bargain. Certainly, this is a standalone movie which is really crunching the numbers in a big way for Disney.

It’s also claimed the record for the biggest long holiday weekend opening, as well as the biggest Friday to Sunday opening weekend for a debut during a long holiday – which translates to the fact that, generally, people have been going wild for this movie. News that people have been hiring out entire screens to help poorer communities see the film may well have helped – making it not just an important movie, but one which will be remembered as one of the decade’s biggest sellers. It’s also claimed records for the biggest February weekend opening, and is the highest-grossing movie by a black director in the US – as well as having played host to the biggest opening weekend for a non-white director, having beat back the likes of last year’s seminal hit Moonlight.

Black Panther is set to become even more of a record breaker globally, it is predicted, meaning that 2018 could be another huge year for Disney. It’s little wonder that the MCU keeps rolling forward!
