AppSec ABCs: The Cybersecurity Industry’s First Children’s Book

Security expert, Caroline Wong, uses characters and scenes that are familiar to children to help explain application security concepts in a new children's book.

SAN FRANCISCO (PRWEB) February 20, 2019

Caroline Wong is an internationally recognized Cybersecurity expert with a special knack for explaining complex concepts in simple terms. Her popular Security Metrics textbook has helped thousands of Cybersecurity professionals understand how to measure and manage security programs, and last year she built two LinkedIn Learning courses on the OWASP Top 10, the industry’s up to date list of common hacker attacks on software.

Now, the mother of two young children is taking “cyber-splaining” to the next level with her latest project, AppSec ABCs. Intended for kids ages 0-10, Caroline was frustrated with the absence of cybersecurity children’s books. So, she decided to write one.

“My three-year-old is a whiz with an iPhone. From the alarm that rings first thing in the morning to the video call app that allows her to talk with her cousins who live in another state, software is already a huge part of her everyday life. I want her to know that her personal information is important, and I want to teach her how to protect it.”

In the book, Caroline and the team at, a penetration testing as a service company headquartered in San Francisco, use characters and scenes that are familiar to children to help explain complex security. For example, in the story of the Three Little Pigs, the wolf is a Threat and the insecure homes made of straw and wood are Vulnerabilities. Throughout the book, a group of friends learns about Cybersecurity concepts and morph into Cybersecurity superheroes.
