Anyone who thinks that space battles are confined only to the likes of popular science fiction such as Star Wars can think again – as it seems that there is already consideration being put out there for what we should do with the black, empty void above us should we need to fight it out there in centuries to come. Such consideration comes from US President Donald Trump, who courted a number of different responses – some of them derisory – this week, as he discussed the potential for ‘war-fighting’ in outer space. His ad hoc proposition? A ‘space force’.
Once again, certain phrases of the President’s have been seized upon by the media – though, as some outlets state, it seems that Trump may have been flying by the seat of his pants while discussing this most recent proposition! “My new national strategy for space recognizes that space is a war-fighting domain, just like the air, land and sea – we may even have a Space Force,” advised Trump to crowds at a San Diego Marine Corps Air Station recently.

The President continued to elaborate, making it clear that his idea could well have been born out of a passing muse. “We’re doing a tremendous amount of work in space – I said ‘maybe we need a new force – we’ll call it the Space Force!’ – and I was not really serious – and then I said, ‘what a great idea’! Maybe we’ll have to do that.” Love or hate the US President, this latest soundbite is classic spontaneous Trump – possibly at his finest! The internet, of course, reacted in various ways, with many seizing upon the ‘Space Force’ quote as a meme of sorts – making it another quote of Trump’s that will no doubt enter tomes about the man in years to come. Is ‘Space Force’ the new ‘covfefe’? Let’s perhaps not go that far.

Trump has been open about his plans to help with US space programs and while opinion is split on quite how effective his plans are for future funding, we can at least sleep safe at night knowing that – some day – a ‘Space Force’ may come into effect to help protect us. Whether or not you read that in a sarcastic tone or otherwise – the need for a space patrol in the decades and centuries to come isn’t too far-fetched. With that in mind – is Trump a visionary, or a fantasist? You be the judge!
