This Week in History: August 13th - August 19thby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

It’s that time again – time to dust off the history books and to take a deep delve into the annals of time to see exactly what went down this week all those years, decades and centuries gone by. History really is fascinating – and where better place to start than in the present? Here’s our take on this week in history.

August 13th, 1961 – The Birth of the Berlin Wall
A symbol of Cold War Europe, the controversial border between East and West Germany would stay in place until 1989, when the wall started undergoing a much publicized tearing-down.
Famous Birthday: Alfred Hitchcock (Director), 1899 – 1980

August 14th, 1945 – VJ Day
A pivotal moment which would effectively act as one of many dominoes to topple WWII towards its end – as Japan announced their surrender on this day 73 years ago.
Famous Birthday: Magic Johnson (Basketball legend), 58

August 15th, 1969 – Woodstock Opens
Perhaps the most pivotal festival of the ‘flower power’ movement of the 1960s – despite occurring towards the decade’s very climax – the Woodstock Music and Art Fair opened today on Max Yasgur’s Dairy Farm, NY. It’s still seen as the template for modern music festivals to this day.
Famous Birthday: Jennifer Lawrence (Actor), 27

August 16th, 2012 – Assange Finds Refuge
This week, controversial WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange marks six years of having taken refuge at Ecuador’s London Embassy – will he mark it by leaving his station for good? Who’s to say!
Famous Birthday: Madonna (Singer), 59

August 17th, 1998 – Clinton’s Controversial Testimony
It was the scandal that dogged his Presidency – and it was on this day 20 years ago that Bill Clinton would admit via recorded testimony that he had an ‘improper physical relationship’ with Ms Monica Lewinsky, who had been working at the Oval Office. Clinton, despite the uproar, would not face impeachment.
Famous Birthday: Robert De Niro (Actor), 74

August 18th 1960 – The Beatles’ First Performance
While not yet in their final line-up and ahead of their iconic gig at the Cavern Club, Liverpool, The Beatles as-is performed live for the very first time 58 years ago today – in Germany, believe it or not – at the Kaiserkeller, Hamburg.
Famous Birthday: Robert Redford (Actor), 81

August 19th, 1900 – Cricket Debuts – and Finishes – at the Olympics
Cricket, believe it or not, has only ever been played at the Olympic Games once – one match only – and that was in Paris in 1900. Will it make a comeback any time soon? It’s hard to believe it wasn’t optioned for London 2012!
Famous Birthday: Bill Clinton (Former US President), 71
