This Week in History: October 15th - October 21stby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

It’s that time again – it’s always worth dipping into history here and there, not only because there’s plenty of lessons to be learned – it’s fascinating to see where we’ve come from, how far we’ve travelled, and how things have changed in the decades and centuries gone by. Let’s take a look at this week back in time – and take a trip back to historic October!

October 15th, 2017 – Alyssa Milano Popularizes the #MeToo Hashtag
The #MeToo movement is perhaps one of the most important social movements of recent times – as Alyssa Milano took to Twitter to encourage anyone who had ever been sexually assaulted or harassed to reply with ‘me too’. This movement would eventually lead to a number of high profile names being investigated for alleged misdemeanors.

October 16th, 1923 – The Disney Brothers form their Cartoon Studio
Walt Disney – and brother Roy Disney – formed their now legendary cartoon studio on this day 95 years ago. Since then, the Disney brand has expanded to be perhaps the best-known movie studio in Hollywood right now – with animation, Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel all under their wing.
Famous Birthday: Angela Lansbury (Actress), 93

October 17th, 1907 – The First Transatlantic Wireless Service
Thanks to Guglielmo Marconi, radio operators and listeners in Ireland, Canada and beyond were on this day able to communicate commercially – and wirelessly – revolutionizing radio forever.
Famous Birthday: Eminem (Musician), 46

October 18th, 1931 – Al Capone Finally Convicted
Notorious gangster Al Capone – hunted by law enforcement for years on end – was finally brought to justice on this day. But for what? Tax evasion, no less!
Famous Birthday: Jean-Claude Van Damme (Actor), 58

October 19th, 1987 – Black Monday
One of the most infamous moments in Wall Street history, Black Monday saw Dow Jones stock collapse by a colossal 22%, which was at the time almost five times the previous record drop.
Famous Birthday: Evander Holyfield (Boxer), 56

October 20th, 1864 – Thanksgiving Becomes a National Holiday
It was US President Abraham Lincoln who first ensured that Thanksgiving – an important moment in the country’s history – would become a national holiday back in 1864.
Famous Birthday: Mickey Mantle (Baseball Legend), 1931 - 1995

October 21st, 1945 – French Women Get the Vote
An important moment for women everywhere – for French women in particular – as France allows women to be able to vote in elections for the very first time. It’s hard to believe women in the country have only been able to vote for a little over 70 years.
Famous Birthday: Carrie Fisher (Actor), 1956 - 2016
