It’s perhaps been a more dramatic week in the news than most, but as always, we are here to help you digest some of the bigger stories which have emerged if you have been unable to take in events one at a time as they occurred. Here is our weekly rundown of the past seven days in world news – and what we didn’t know a week ago.

Thousand Oaks Shooting: Twelve Killed
Twelve people lost their lives this week as it emerged that a lone gunman opened fire at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California on November 5th. The assailant was found dead at the scene, and no motive has been assumed by those investigating at the time of writing.

Melbourne Terror Attack: Man Arrested
Melbourne, Australia, too, has seen tragedy this week. A man has been arrested after setting a car alight and stabbing three people in the city, having been shot by police in what is being treated as a terrorist incident. The incident has claimed the life of one, while two remain in hospital at the time of writing. The investigation continues.

The Democrats Make Gains in Midterm Elections
This week’s Midterm Elections in the US saw a dramatic change in Congress, as the Democrats gained enough seats and votes to claim back the majority of the House of Representatives for the first time since 2010. The Republicans, meanwhile, were able to strengthen their majority in the Senate, meaning that the results have been a mixed bag for both sides – though many will be watching to see whether or not the House opts to investigate Trump further with their new powers.

Google Concedes: Changes Must Be Made
In light of mass global walkouts to protest against sexual harassment policies, Google has this week announced that it intends to rewrite some of its rules to give complainants greater say in proceedings – as well as to implement a ‘drinking limit’ to combat the influence of alcohol, which has reportedly been identified as a common trend in harassment claims lobbied with the firm.

All Change for Shrek?
In entertainment news, Universal Studios have requested that animation guru Chris Meledandri oversee a reboot of sorts for Shrek, arguably DreamWorks’ most popular and enduring franchise. Meledandri hopes to be able to retain the movies’ original voice cast, as the Illumination producer is also tasked with looking at ways to rethink Puss in Boots for a whole new generation.
