Theresa May Gets Cabinet Backing for Brexit - But Many Aren’t Happyby 👨‍💻 Simon Baxendale

British Prime Minister Theresa May asserts her Cabinet has backed her draft plan for Brexit - but could a vote of no confidence be in the cards?

With all the back-and-forth that appears to have gone on with regard to the UK’s divorce from the European Union, a glimmer of hope for Brexit appears to have emerged – as Prime Minister Theresa May has asserted that her Cabinet has backed her draft plan for her EU proposal.

A withdrawal agreement drafted by the Prime Minister is said to have met with majority approval after gruelling discussions over the proposed exodus, according to Sky News. The outlet’s feed on the news, continuing to update at the time of writing, suggests that despite the outward consensus being offered that the draft is good to go to Brussels, there continues to be mixed feelings within May’s own Conservative Party regarding the suitability of her plan. Certainly, mixed feelings over May’s intentions for Brexit appear to be nothing new, with a number of high-profile Cabinet Ministers such as Boris Johnson having left their posts in protest at what has been called the ‘Chequers Plan’.

May has referred to news of Cabinet backing as being a ‘decisive step forward’, while news has also broken that ‘decisive progress’ has been made with regard to Brexit according to Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission. High praise indeed – and if news is to be believed, this could mean that a potential deal for Brexit may be agreed upon by the end of November as per initial plans. Concerns, however, are still high – as tensions between May and the Northern Irish DUP appear to still be playing a major role at this relatively late stage in proceedings.

Despite the majority verdict having been advised on the draft, the feeling is mixed – according to Sky News. Some sources claim that some in favour of Brexit aren’t happy at all with decisions made – while some sources within the Conservative Party remain keen to keep the pressure on May.

“The Cabinet backing this deal is the quickest route to a leadership election,” advised MP Nadine Dorries, suggesting that a vote of no confidence in May could be on the cards. “Cabinet members know thus and for the more ambitious it can’t come quick enough.”

Therefore – while the news that May appears to have found some consensus on Brexit seems to be good for the process – and enlightening for the EU – there continue to be rumblings within Westminster. Where will it all end?
