Anyone who remembers some of the more dramatic moments of the 2016 US General Election will be hard pushed to forget that Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was embroiled in a very public scandal of having used private emails in the White House while acting as Secretary of State for Barack Obama. Donald Trump famously took Clinton to task over the affair – however, it appears his daughter Ivanka may have also been using her own email account to conduct White House business during 2017.
According to BBC News, a thorough review into Ms Trump’s email usage showed that she had used her personal email account to contact a number of government figures, which officials have recently confirmed. White House officials have stated that her emails contained no information considered classified, and that such matters occurred as a result of a simple misunderstanding. The official line, in fact, claims that Ms Trump was advised against using her personal email address for such correspondence, and did so when requested.

However, despite the reported lack of confidential information having been sent via personal email, there is still concern lingering in the air over whether or not Ms Trump violated federal record-keeping rules. The circumstances draw similarity with the Clinton case from 2016, where it was determined that the Secretary had been ‘extremely careless’ in her handling of official emails from a personal server, which was reported to have been set up and used in favor of official White House services for convenience.
Despite officials claiming the wrongdoing to have been remedied and to have been a case of misunderstanding, some remain keen to see that a further investigation takes place. One such voice speaking out is Austin Evers, representing American Oversight, a group who had in fact requested via Freedom of Information with regard to White House undertakings. “There are serious questions that Congress should immediately investigate,” Mr Evers stated. “Did Ivanka Trump turn over all of her emails for preservation as required by law? Was she sending classified information over a private system?”
President Trump, at that time, claimed the saga to be ‘bigger than Watergate’, and was the tipping point for his long-running campaign pledge to investigate Clinton as a criminal. ‘Lock her up’ chants were in fact encouraged by the President during his trail. Now that similar circumstances appear to apply to his own daughter, quite how the President will react long-term will remain to be seen.
