Brexit Will Make the UK Poorer - According to the Governmentby 👩‍💻 Stephanie Boyd

Is there a day that truly goes by without some media outlet somewhere talking about the ever-evolving saga that is Brexit? Britain’s forthcoming exit from the European Union is nothing short of unprecedented – which is what has arguably led to a number of the administrative issues and in-fighting which appears to have been unfolding over the past few months. With just a few months to go until the divorce is officially set to take place, the British government has been struggling within itself to get a grip on a good deal to represent the will of the people and to appease those within the EU in negotiations. However, according to recent governmental forecasts, it seems that any hopes of the UK becoming better off after Brexit are fading fast.

According to BBC News, government analysis shows that the UK’s economy could be set to shrink by a further 3.9% should Prime Minister Theresa May’s current plans for Brexit be adhered to for 15 years. May has continued to state in the face of growing unrest and division that the deal she has proposed will be the best for the country – and with a 9.3% economic downturn expected should the country drop out of talks without a deal, it appears she may be onto something.

“Our deal is the best deal available for jobs and our economy, that allows us to honour the referendum and realize the opportunities of Brexit,” May confirmed during Prime Minister’s Questions on November 28th. However, while the PM’s deal may seem like the best option on the table right now, many are discussing whether or not Brexit should go ahead at all given the choice that’s available.

Many ‘Leave’ voters are unhappy that the plans laid out by May are failing to remove the EU from future deals as much as they had been led to believe. Meanwhile, MPs within May’s own party are increasingly concerned that the deal proposed fails to live up to the ‘will of the people’.

While a deal has apparently been earmarked by May and the EU in recent days, the deal still needs to receive approval from Parliament – and with many experts saying it won’t, the UK is left with the very real possibility of crashing out without a deal at all. Otherwise, this means taking May’s plan or cancelling Brexit completely!
