El Chapo Found Guilty – Mexican Drug Kingpin Faces Life in Jail

El Chapo Found Guilty – Mexican Drug Kingpin Faces Life in Jailby 👩‍💻 Stephanie Boyd

After a three-month trial in New York, infamous drug baron Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman has been found guilty of drug trafficking on no less than ten separate counts. Guzman’s rise to a billionaire lifestyle has reportedly been well-documented, having made his fortune as a result of his colossal drug empire in his native Mexico. The three-month trial, according to CNN, culminated in a guilty verdict after six days of deliberation by an anonymous jury.

El Chapo became notorious for his rise to drug lord infamy as the head of the Sinaloa cartel, who had thrived for years under the kingpin’s authority. Sinaloa operated without intervention for so long, it is thought, as a result of years of ongoing corruption and a culture of fear. During El Chapo’s reign, many lives were lost, while others were completely destroyed. He will face life imprisonment as a result of being indicted, though formal sentencing will not take place until later this summer.

The jury bore witness to one of the most dramatic court cases to unfold in NYC for some time. Guzman was brought to task for international drug distribution, criminal enterprizing, narcotics laundering conspiracy and continued use of firearms. Over 200 hours of combined testimony from almost 60 different witnesses brave enough to come forward helped to cement a case against one of the most notorious drugs barons in Mexico’s history. The anonymous jury was shown months of dramatic detail on cold-blooded murders, extensive trafficking and even torture.

Guzman was also trapped by his own digital trail. Photos, calls and texts all helped to nail down the kingpin. While scores of witnesses against the baron came forward, his defense counsel only ever called one to the stand. Suffice to say, they did not convince the criminal jury. Having escaped jail twice in the past decade, prison is by no means a new scenario for El Chapo.

Sinaloa was able to smuggle and distribute illicit drugs worldwide under Guzman’s leadership. However, it is thought that the cartel will continue to operate despite its leader having taken the fall – meaning that much more work will need to be done if there is to be any progress made in the war on drugs. Guzman is a big name who has fallen hard from being one of the richest men in the world – but drug trafficking is, as witnesses to this case have seen, a shocking business.
