Trump Threatens to Close Mexico Border If Illegal Immigration Continuesby 👩‍💻 Stephanie Boyd

US President Donald Trump’s continued rhetoric with regard to the US-Mexico border, immigration and his proposed border wall has returned to the headlines this weekend, as a stalemate in Congress on such matters continues. Trump, who has previously suggested closing the US-Mexico border completely, has returned to such proposals as he doubles down on illegal immigration.

Taking to Twitter to focus back on illegal immigration into the US, Trump led with a series of tweets on Friday 29th that suggested he could be swayed to close borders as early as ‘next week’. “The DEMOCRATS have given us the weakest immigration laws anywhere in the World,” The President tweeted. “Mexico has the strongest, & they make more than $100 Billion a year on the U.S. Therefore, CONGRESS MUST CHANGE OUR WEAK IMMIGRATION LAWS NOW, & Mexico must stop illegals from entering the U.S. through their country and our Southern Border.”

No stranger to using the social media platform to air his personal views on White House proceedings, the President continued to lay down his position to his followers. “Mexico has for many years made a fortune off of the U.S., far greater than Border Costs. If Mexico doesn’t immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States throug our Southern Border, I will be CLOSING the Border, or large sections of the Border, next week.” [sic]

President Trump, however, has not yet been clear as to which parts of the border he would be focusing on, according to the New York Times. Border crossing were thought to have reached a record high for over a decade in February, with over 76,000 people moving from one side to the other. This, if nothing else, perhaps spells concerns for the Trump Presidency – in that their hardline approach may not have had the immediate results it was hoping for.

“This would be so easy for Mexico to do, but they just take our money and ‘talk’,” Trump continued. “Besides, we lose so much money with them, especially when you add in drug trafficking etc.), that the Border closing would be a good thing!” [sic]

The problem of illegal immigration in the US is one which continues to escalate. Trump’s regime has had a famously hardline stance against border crossings from the early days of his election campaign. However, with there being no movement on wall funding from Congress a quarter of the way into 2019, it appears the White House may have to look at alternative strategies. Could this be to close the border down – or at least parts of it – as we move into April?
