at 6... we start tonight with that fire that completely gutted a building downtown... kq2's brooke anderson is live along 10th street tonight with the latest on the investigation... alan -- fire crews were on scene here at south 10th street, right across from patee park, for about five hours battling the smoke and flames that left this building destroyed smoke was first detected coming from the structure just before 9 this morning this was not a vacant building -- it was home to a family owned and operated business called dent technology -- who specialize in making tools to repair dents witnesses say black smoke could be seen from as far away as the i-29 and frederick avenue intersection one witness who was working across the street at the time says he tried getting into the building with fire extinguishers before fire crews arrived on scene (sot robert: "there was a guy that came over and said 'hey do you own this building? it's got a fire in it.' we tried to get in but there was so much smoke coming out they said 'no, don't go in there'. then in about 8-10 minutes the fire department showed up.")(sot mindy: "first indications are that it started in the basement and burned through - burned all the way up into the roof..") the building next door -- adam's printing -- also suffered smoke and water damage fire crews say no one was in either building at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported authorities say the cause of the fire is still under investigation reporting live in dowtown, brooke anderson kq2 your local news leader smoke from the fire not only seen for blocks on the ground...but high in the air... take a look at this video... this was shot by jim smith..who lives here in st. joseph... jim and his grandson caleb were flying their piper pacer airplane when they passed over the fire on 10th street this morning... jim is a pilot...caleb learning how to fly was behind the controls..while jim pulled out his phone and captured this video... you can see more of his video on our facebook page. a federal investigation now underway
