Brandon ortega:"giselle valedos began high school playing volleyball and softball and just having the time of her life.

Not long after high school started she got news that would change things forever."

Giselle valedos:"for me it was kind of like a plot twist."

At fourteen years old, valedos has diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

Giselle valedos:"at that point i was very frustrated.

I was very upset you know.

This thing had controlled my life now.

I really didn't really wanna talk about it a lot.

I was really to myself.

I was very depressed for a long while.

I basically just told my mom just forget about it don't look for a doctor.

Like i'll live my life until you know until i can."p her mom didn't listen.

Valedos was not alone with the challenges ahead.

Giselle valedos:"i had my family and my friends standing beside through all the times to keep me strong, keep me motivated, keep me going."

As treatments wore down, valedos got well enough to return to school.

Soon after she found something to put her mind at ease.

Sharyland's future farmer's of america.

Giselle valedos:"joining ffa kinda like took my mind off of things.

Going to the farm being around the animals was kind of like like medidation you know.

Being around them was like a distraction of what was really going on in my life."

Valedos' love of animals helped distract from the hardships of having cancer.

Raising pigs became her new passion.

Giselle valedos:"you techinically have to raise and take it care of it.

It's practically your baby for that period."

This is valedos' pig lola.

Right now weighs two hundred and fifty nine pounds.

Side by side valedos and lola have been together for three years.

Sidney carter:"she's an excellent student to have in class.

Very well mannered.

A very mature and young individual.

I've had the pleasure of having her for three years now.

Not only as a student in class but as an ffa officer."

Giselle valedos:"ms. carter was always there by my side.

I had really great advisors to help me through this journey and experience of live stock it's very entertaining."

Brandon ortega:"valedos says this disease will require medication for the rest of her life.

More treatments as well... she's set to have another during spring break.

But that has not stopped her from her love of ffa.

Valedos represented sharyland at this weekend's livestock show in mercedes.

She plans to take part in many more through the rest of the year.
