Tri-State Students Join Forces To Standup Against Gun Violen

Students around the country are taking a stand against gun violence, and while kids were participating in national walkout day today, others are preparing for more action.

Good evening, welcome to 44 news at 5 - i'm amanda decker.

And i'm chris cerenelli.

Local students from schools in evansville and henderson were making ribbons this morning, to wear during the march for our lives event - march 24th.

44news reporter veronica dekett has more on the group of local students organizing a march in evansville... "we believe that enough is enough, and we never want kids to be shot in schools again, and this is a way for us to voice that concern, through a march."

Local students from various area schools are joining forces to stand up against gun violence.

"we are going to conduct a 'march for our lives' march, which is a march in response to gun violence and school safety, and it's led by children and led by kids inspired after the parkland shooting."

"i feel like if we really stand up, and stay unified, and they see a really big group of students really trying to make a difference, other people will try and help as well."

In preparation for the event on march 24th, the students are making almost 700 ribbons to wear during the march.

"these ribbons have the victims names on them as well as their age, and this is an active tribute for the victims of mass shootings."

According to the students, the prevalence of school shootings has been affecting their learning environment.

"you hear a book drop, and you're afraid it's a gun shot.

You're sitting in class, and you're looking at how many windows there are, and how many points of entry, and it's just terrifying.

It causes nightmares, and it's just really scary."

Many of the students say they want to get involved because they just want to feel safe at school.

"i don't feel like anyone should have to go somewhere everyday when they're just terrified to be there.

I feel like it really just sets back the whole school, and everyone just kind of doesn't want to be there."

Veronica dekett, 44news.

Anyone can participate in march for our lives.

All participants will be gathering at first presbyterian church in evansville on march 24th at 1 pm.
