Canadian envoy to China fired after Huawei comments

Just days after sparking controversy over the Huawei extradition case, Canada's ambassador to China has been fired.

John McCallum had said that Huawei's CFO, Meng Wanzhou, who was detained in Vancouver last month, could make 'strong arguments' against being sent to the U.S. - partly because of President Donald Trump's politicization of the case.

Those comments didn't sit well with Trudeau's liberal party, with the Canadian Prime Minister side-stepping questions about it earlier last week.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU, SAYING: (JOURNALIST ASKING OFF CAMERA: "Do you agree with your ambassador to China that Ms. Meng has a strong case against extradition?") "We have always highlighted that Canada is a country with a rule of law, and we will make sure that the rule of law is properly and fully followed.

That of course, includes the opportunity for her to mount a strong defense." On Saturday (January 26) Trudeau said that he had asked for, and accepted, McCallum's resignation.

According to experts, this marks the first time a Canadian ambassador has ever been officially fired.

68-year-old McCallum, a long-term former Liberal cabinet minister, is not a trained diplomat.

Opposition legislators and former ambassadors have accused him of unacceptable political interference, in a case that's badly damaged ties between Canada and China.
