Children Phone Labor Leader Bill Shorten During Anti-Mining School Strike

Children held an anti-mining “school strike” outside Labor Leader Bill Shorten’s office at Moonee Ponds, Victoria, on February 8.The young students – part of a Students Strike 4 Climate campaign chanted outside Mr Shorten’s office and tried to call the Labor leader to organise a meeting, but were directed to his voicemail. In a media release, the group stated: “The students plan to strike from school every Friday ahead of the March 15 Global #ClimateStrike which will see school students in 40 countries join with adult supporters to walk out of school and work for the day to demand urgent climate action from their political leaders.”Indian coal miner Adani is planning a controversial new mine in Queensland’s Galilee Basin. The plan has been a lightning rod for environmental groups who sharply criticised the project’s implications for both Queensland’s natural heritage and climate change according to the Sydney Morning Herald.Mr Shorten is the federal Opposition leader and widely tipped to be Australia’s next Prime Minister after a federal election expected in May.
