China upbeat on U.S. trade talks

China struck an upbeat tone on Monday as trade talks resumed with the U.S. (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESWOMAN, HUA CHUNYING, SAYING: " For us, like the rest of the world, we hope to see good results from the trade discussions." The US is expected to maintain pressure on Beijing though to reform how it treats American companies' intellectual property The discussions will last all week - with top U.S delegates arriving in China on Thursday.

It comes after negotiations in Washington last month ended without a deal The heat is on as a March 1st deadline looms. U.S. tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports are due to increase from ten to 25 percent.

The escalating tensions have cost both countries billions of dollars, disrupted global trade and roiled financial markets.

And any improvement in relations could prove fragile.

On Monday two U.S. warships sailed near islands claimed by China in the disputed South China Sea Beijing has accused Washington of provocation Asked if the move would impact trade talks, a Chinese official said that "a series of U.S. tricks" showed what Washington was thinking.

But that China remains committed to resolving the trade frictions
