Oregon On Track To Impose State-wide Rent Control Law

Oregon lawmakers are considering a measure that would make it the first state to impose mandatory rent controls.

It would stop landlords from ending month-to-month leases without due cause.

It also limits rate hikes to only once per year.

The Senate passed the bill last week, and it's expected to pass in the House as well.

And Gov.

Kate Brown said she's looking forward to signing it if it makes it to her desk.

Rent control has become a priority for Oregon due to housing shortages and quickly increasing rents, with some people saying their rent has gone up by as much as 100 percent.

Oregon was ranked as the second top moving destination in 2018, according to United Van Lines.

In fact, Oregon's House Speaker said the state would have to build 30,000 housing units a year just to meet the state's current deficit and handle the influx of people.
