An Israeli spacecraft rocketed toward the moon for the country's first attempted lunar landing, following a launch on Thursday night by SpaceX.

The Beresheet lander, which is about the size of a washing machine, will orbit Earth for two months until it is close enough to be captured by lunar gravity.

Touchdown is expected to be on April 11 at the Sea of Serenity.
