Russian Bolshoi premieres Rusalka by Dvorak

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre will premiere Antonin Dvorak's opera "Rusalka," based on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" and Czech fairy tales.

Opera director Timofey Kulyabin said it was important for him to keep the fairy tale atmosphere of the story while speaking about modern times and people.

The heavily classic piece has several modern elements - one of the scenes shows Rusalka and Prince sitting on film theater chairs, eating popcorn and drinking soda together.

Written in 1900, the opera became instant success among the Czech and international public.

Rusalka is a water spirit from Slavic mythology inhabiting rivers, lakes and swamps.

The first public performance of the opera is set for the evening of Wednesday (March 6).
