Britain to seek delay that could derail Brexit

In the latest in a marathon of votes this week, Britain's parliament has voted to seek a delay to Brexit.

That doesn't mean it's all off -- Prime Minister Theresa May is still pushing her reviled deal, and will put it to a third vote in parliament.

Lucy Fielder reports.

Britain to seek delay that could derail Brexit

Britain will seek to delay Brexit -- and that could derail the whole process.

Just two weeks before it is due to leave the European Union, parliament voted overwhelmingly Thursday to hold off -- and look for a way out of Britain's worst political crisis for generations.

Though Brussels still has to approve the postponement, which would be short if a deal is agreed in the next few days, much longer if not.

Now British Prime Minister Theresa May is using that delay threat to push Brexit supporters within her own party to hold their noses -- and back, at last, her reviled exit deal.

Out of fear that Brexit is slipping beyond their grasp.

So parliament will vote yet again, probably next week.

Success would mean "third time lucky" for a deal crushed in the biggest parliamentary defeat in decades in January, and again this week.

But Brussels still says that treaty -- the fruit of two and a half years of talks -- is the only show in town.

Remainers are celebrating.

They, too, think postponement makes undoing Brexit more likely.

Perhaps through a second referendum.

But to thwart that, and back May's deal, Brexiteers will have to swallow their concerns...that the treaty keeps Britain within the EU's orbit.
