Trump vetoes measure against border 'emergency'

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING: "Today I am vetoing this resolution." One day after the Republican-controlled Senate VOTED TO REJECT Trump's declaration of a national emergency on the southern border… …President Trump followed through on HIS PROMISE to VETO the measure…making it the first of his presidency.

(SOUNDNBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING: "Congress's vote to deny the crisis on the southern border is a vote against reality... it is a tremendous national emergency.

It is a tremendous crisis." On Thursday, 12 Republicans joined Democrats to oppose Trump's emergency order aimed at building his signature wall with Mexico… after the House of Representatives did the same last month … (SOUNDBITE) (English) UTAH REPUBLICAN SENATOR MIKE LEE SAYING: "A border barrier is a policy I support, wholeheartedly, unequivocally... an emergency declaration... is different." But Congress does not appear to have enough votes to OVERRIDE Trump's veto, meaning the president will still be able to carry out his plans….though the emergency order is likely to face a long battle in the courts.

Trump issued the order in February in the wake of a bruising 35-day federal shutdown..

After Congress rejected his $5.7 billion demand for the wall.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) TENNESSEE REPUBLICAN SENATOR LAMAR ALEXANDER SAYING: "The President's emergency declaration... is inconsistent with the United States Constitution." (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING: "I think, actually, national emergency was designed for a specific purpose like this." Trump signed the veto surrounded by border officials and people who have had family members killed by illegal immigrants.

Data shows people who are in the country illegally are less likely to commit crimes than legal US residents.
