Rescue worker's helmet camera captures dramatic cruise ship rescue

ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION A camera mounted on a rescue worker's helmet showed the dramatic rescue of passengers from the Viking Sky cruise ship on Saturday (March 23).

The Viking Sky sent out a mayday signal on Saturday, with about 1,300 passengers and crew onboard, as it drifted in rough waters in the Norwegian Sea to within 100 meters of land.

Rescue services airlifted 479 people, hoisting them one-by-one on to helicopters, before the weather subsided on Sunday (March 24) and a tow could begin.

Many of them were senior citizens.

The 915 passengers were mainly from the United States and Britain, the rescue services said.

There were also Canadians and Australians on board, among others, the cruise company said.
