Fifth grader dies after classroom fight

School officials say a fifth grader who was injured when a fight broke out in her classroom at a South Carolina school has died.

NATS: "We failed.

The community has failed." "What are we supposed to do, what am I supposed to tell my kids?" A difficult discussion for parents from a South Carolina school following the death of a fifth grader who was injured in a classroom fight.

Raniya Wright attended Forest Hills Elementary School in Walterboro.

School officials say she died two days after a fight with another student in the classroom.

SOUNDBITE: LOHNNIE GREEN, PARENT, SAYING: "It kind of just broke my heart.

It could have most definitely been my son" Ten year old Raniya was reportedly found unconscious by emergency services in the school's nursing station.

She was airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

SOUNDBITE: LOHNNIE GREEN, PARENT, SAYING: "We were just kind of the edge of our seats, just kind of hope it would get better and we're just exhausted." School officials say the other student involved in the fight has been suspended until an investigation is complete.

Details about the cause of the fight have not been released.
