Christchurch Mayor Says City 'Will Not Be Defined' by Mosque Attacks

Mayor of Christchurch Lianne Dalziel spoke at a National Remembrance Service held in Christchurch, New Zealand, on March 29, to honour the victims of the March 15 mosque attacks.

In her opening address, Dalziel offered sympathy on behalf of the people of Christchurch to all families impacted by the shootings, “You do not grieve alone, we grieve with you,’’ she said.

“What happened here in our city on that day, which was a cowardly attack on our Muslim communities in their places of worship at their time of prayer, was also an attack on us all; on our shared values and on our way of life.’’ Prime minister Jacinda Ardern also spoke at the event while a number of musicians performed including British singer Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens.
