Federal Prosecutors: Maryland Man Tried to Carry Out ISIS-Inspired Truck Attack on Pedestrians
Federal prosecutors urged a judge to keep a Maryland man detained who they say was planning to run over pedestrians with a stolen U-Haul truck in an ISIS-inspired attack.????28-year-old Rondell Henry was arrested on March 28th and charged with driving a stolen vehicle across state lines.????During questioning, prosecutors say Henry revealed his intention was to commit a pedestrian attack…??...similar to the 2016 attacks in Nice, France where over 80 people were killed when a large truck drove into a tourist area.????According to the Associated Press, Henry told authorities he wanted to create “panic and chaos”...????...saying “I was just going to keep driving and driving and driving.
I wasn’t going to stop.”????Police say on March 26th, Henry walked off his job in the middle of the day, stole a U-Haul truck and looked for a location to carry out his proposed attack.????Prosecutors say that Henry attempted for nearly two hours to breach the security area of Dulles International Airport…????...before settling on the popular National Harbor tourist area in Maryland, on the outskirts of Washington DC.????Prosecutors say that Henry seeing a small, weekday morning crowd then decided to hide in a boat overnight.????He was then caught the next morning when he leaped over a security fence.????Police later found Henry’s phone discarded on the highway which contained images of the ISIS flag and ISIS fighters.????Henry faces the stolen vehicle charge, but the AP reports that prosecutors are likely to attempt to add more charges related to planning an attack.
