Prism ERGHMI, Verizon Media & BUILD Series NYC Present: LGBTQ Representation in Media
HMI’s Speaker Series is a quarterly panel series that brings together celebrities, activists, thought leaders, and notable individuals to lead an innovative and thought-provoking conversation on topics pertaining to the LGBTQIA+ community.
The mission is to engage partners, community members, and friends for a night of storytelling and conversation.
The topic of this panel is "LGBTQ Representation in Media." As a youth serving organization, HMI recognizes the importance of youth seeing themselves represented on all media platforms. Historically, LGBTQ characters were one dimensional, relying heavily on cultural stereotypes.
As a result, consumers based their understanding of an entire community off a narrow representation of a fictional character.
Huff Post' Cole Delbyck chatted with Clare Kenny, Director of Youth Engagement, GLAAD; Diana Tourjee, Journalist, Vice Media; and Phil Jimenez, comics artist.
