Sirens blared as wind and rain lashed Fort Smith, Arkansas, before a damaging National Weather Service-confirmed tornado touched down on Sunday, May 19.

Footage posted to Instagram shows the storm’s approach.

The National Weather Service in Tulsa later confirmed an EF-1 tornado north of Phoenix Avenue.

Trees were uprooted and homes damaged, the service said.

Other video posted to social media showed damage to buildings in the area.

Local schools were closed on Monday due to power outages and downed lines, local media reported.
