Another setback for Boeing in getting its best-selling troubled 737 MAX plane back up in the air - it forced major U.S. airlines to wipe out flights through the busy summer travel season.

The Federal Aviation Administration warned Wednesday it had identified a new issue that Boeing must address before the planes can even be considered for a return to flight.

Sources told Reuters exclusively tests reveal Boeing is still having trouble resolving a software glitch that causes the nose of the plane to head lower, ignoring a manual pilot over-ride.

Boeing agrees with the FAA's decision and said it will continue to work to fix the problem.

That prompted Southwest Airlines, the biggest buyer of the 737 MAX, to announce Thursday it is cancelling flights using the plane through October 1st.

The 737 MAX's other two big U.S. customers: United Airlines and American Airlines previously announced cancellations through early September.

Airlines are on edge as Boeing seems unable to tackle issues which grounded the plane in March after two accidents killed 346 people.

The trade association representing the world's airlines on Thursday called on global regulators to work together to certify the safety of the plane and get it back in the air.

It also called for global coordination in the training requirements for the MAX flight crew.

Boeing shares dropped Thursday.

They've lost nearly a quarter of their value since the beginning of March.
