Iran to execute alleged CIA spy ring members

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is dismissing claims by Tehran that it has captured 17 spies working for the Central Intelligence Agency.

Meanwhile, the first images emerge of the crew of the UK-flagged tanker seized by Iran.

Matthew Larotonda reports.

These are the first images of the crew of the UK-flagged oil tanker seized by Iran last week in the Strait of Hormuz.

The crew hails from India, Latvia, Russia, and the Philippines.

The images' release on Iranian television also came with a new development in the spiraling situation: Iran announced it has captured 17 spies it alleges work for the American CIA, and intends to execute some of them.

President Trump is categorically denying that any spies have been arrested, and it's not unusual for Iran to make claims like this.

But the timing has raised concern that Tehran is further pulling away from hope of a diplomatic solution.

Its own tanker, the Grace 1 seen here, is still being held under guard by British warships in Gibraltar.

Since the U.S. has already blocked the sale of all Iranian oil worldwide through sanctions, some defense analysts have told Reuters that, stopping short of open conflict, Iran might not have much left to lose.

The Iranian government says the alleged spies were captured over the course of a year ending in March.

And, a television documentary aired in Iran on Monday (July 22) purports to show a CIA officer recruiting an Iranian man in the UAE.

The spies are said to have worked in private sector areas including economics, infrastructure, cyber defense, and nuclear capabilities.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declined to discuss specifics in an interview on Monday but suggested the spy accusations could be tied to ongoing cases of Americans detained in Iran.

Iran Launches Underground Missiles as part of Staged Attack

Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard launched underground ballistic missiles as part of an exercise targeting a mock-up US aircraft carrier in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The military drill, code-named "Great Prophet-14", caused two American bases to go on alert, amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington after a series of escalating incidents last year. The message behind this action was clearly aimed at the US, whose Navy routinely sails into the Persian Gulf from the Strait of Hormuz. Report by Avagninag.
