Pakistan to expel Indian ambassador, Kashmir dispute escalates

Pakistan said on Wednesday it would expel India's ambassador and suspend bilateral trade with its arch-rival after New Delhi stripped its portion of the contested Kashmir region of special status.

Lauren Anthony reports.

This was the scene in Pakistan's parliament on Wednesday (August 7).

The country has said it will expel the Indian ambassador and suspend trade.

As their dispute over Kashmir continues to escalate.

Earlier this week India stripped its side of the contested region of special status, a system that gave it a degree of autonomy.

And both Pakistan and neighbor China have voiced anger over India's removal of the constitutional provision.

That had allowed the country's only Muslim-majority state to make its own laws.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan met with his top generals - also on Wednesday.

It was only months ago that the two nuclear-armed countries last came to blows over the region, including mortar fire and military jets.

And they've fought two wars over this place.

India said the special status had hindered Kashmir's development.

And it wanted to fully integrate the region with the rest of the country.

Meanwhile, Indian security forces have been battling to control Kashmiri protests.

It's coincided with a clampdown on digital communications in the area that started on Sunday.
