Malaysian police say Irish-French girl probably died from hunger, stress

*EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: RESENDING TO ADD SOUNDBITE FROM POLICE CHIEF* Malaysian authorities on Thursday (August 15) said a Irish-French girl whose remains were found near a jungle stream had died from internal bleeding - probably due to prolonged hunger and stress.

The body of Nora Anne Quoirin, who suffered from learning difficulties, was found on Tuesday, without any clothing (August 13).

The fifteen year-old had been missing for 10 days after she disappeared from a rainforest resort in Seremban, about 4 miles south of the Malaysian capital.

State police chief Mohamad Mat Yusop spoke to reporters.

(SOUNDBITE) (Bahasa Malaysia) SEMBILAN STATE POLICE CHIEF, MOHAMAD MAT YUSOP, SAYING: "From Nora's body, it can be confirmed that she has been dead for two to three days, not more than four days and there are no signs or evidence showing that she was raped (...) The main reason for her death is intestinal damage, the intestine was punctured, which could be due to starvation for a long period of time and could also be due to prolonged stress." Police also said there was no evidence "for the time being" to indicate Nora was a victim of kidnapping.
