C1 3 spurlock back in court.

We'll tell you why family and friends filled three rows of the courtroom...even just for a few seconds in court.

And... "we cook with lots of butter.

That's why they like kentucky cooking."

But people in the carolinas won't get that kentucky cooking tonight.

Why this group of volunteers was told to head back home...after hurricane dorian.

Good afternoon, i'm veronica jean seltzer..

Tom kenny has the day off.

In our top story at five... for the first time today, family and friends faced the accused killer of a richmond mother of four.

It was just over a week ago david sparks went from being accused of abuse of a corpse...to killing savannah spurlock.

Abc 36's christy bollinger takes us to court in garrard county.

"david sparks was back in court friday this time answering to a murder charge.

Something we hadn't seen on the table before until last week when a grand jury indicted him for savannah spurlock's murder."

"commonwealth vs david sparks."

Shackled..

Chains and wearing a bullet proof vest... david sparks walked into the courtroom.

His stay wasn't long.

Sparks atty: ""we entered a not guilty plea for david and just because he's indicted doesn't mean he's guilty or that the commonwealth will be able to prove that he's guilty."

He's now charged with murder...when before he was only accused of abuse of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence.

Chains leaving spurlock disappeared in january.

More than six months later, officers say they found her body...naked and bound, in garbage bags...buried in a shallow grave on sparks' parents' property.

Investigators say he replaced a rug in his bedroom...because a similar one was found buried with her.

That's when police arrested him.

Pause or nat investigators say they found spurlock's blood inside his bedroom closet door.

Sparks' attorney..

Erica roland, says the public defender's office is doing its own investigation.

"we're deeply sorry for miss spurlock's family and we hope they're able to get the answers they're looking for."

Spurlock's loved ones filled three rows in the courtroom.

Though none wanted to speak with us after... a man who helped search for her said he'd tell us this one thing.

"they're family to me now obviously and we just want everybody to respect their privacy.

They are wonderful people obviously going through something horrible.

We just want privacy during this."

The commonwealth asked for another month to gather its case since there's so much evidence to pore through.

The judge allowed that.

"sparks' next court date is scheduled for november.

Reporting in garrard county, christy bollinger, abc 36 news."

In wolfe county..

A former school employee is accused of dragging a disabled student across a playground.

According to state police... brenda stamper was arrested yeterday and is now charged with child abuse.

Invesitgators say she intentionally pulled a student by her hands last week..

And dragged her across the playground, injuring the student's bottom.

According to k-s-p..

The alleged incident happened after the student reportedly refused to return back to class, after recess.

School distict officials say stamper...was a teachers' assistant at campton elementary school... but no longer works at the school, becuase of the incident.

A western kentucky, coal miner has died after an accident in hopkins county.

According to state officials..

39-year-old jeremy elder, died yesterday, after he was hurt during a vehicle accident at an underground coal mine in madisonville.

Authorities say he had 15 years of experience of working in the coal mining industry.

The latest now on hurricane dorian.

The storm made landfall this morning, in north carolina, and it's taken more lives.

As morgan norwood reports... the storm has 'also' left people stranded, and surrounded by flood waters.

Take pkg: nats: hurricane dorian - turning deadly- officials confirm four people died as the storm made landfall over cape hatteras, north carolina..

Abc's senior meterologist rob marciano near by in nags head nat pop from rob's morning debrief the storm's high winds sending water rushing down streets...swallowi ng cars..surrounding homes and businesses in ocracoke island.

Rescue teams racing to the scene while officials plan to airlift survivors to safety gov cooper: "the danger right now is the rising storm surge of four to seven feet and flash floods as the hurricane churns along the coast.

Dorian's wrath whipping up nearly 20 tornados across the carolinas over the last two days.

On emerald isle..residents picking up the pieces after a reported twister splintered homes like this one home..miraculously no one was hurt.

Sot: it's like a nuclear wasteland i've never seen anything like this/ it was a deafening noise and then it was gone.

The storm leaving hundreds of thousands in the dark..listen as this transformer explodes knocking out power to this gas station... meanwhile in charleston-clean up begins--businesses that braved the storm..ready to reopen.

Emmy scott / business owner: its all about being here for people part we were very fortunate in the bahamas?new before and after satellite images show the scale of the damage as relief and aid arrives.

Rescue teams transporting some of the injured from hard hit marsh harbour to nassau's prince margret hospital.

Sot injured sound and all across the islands survivors facing utter devastation sot "everything in abaco is totally destroyed, it literally looks like we were bombed."

Morgan: more than 370 thousand people without power across three states.

A flooding emergency along the outer banks- several major freeways and bridges closed.

A long day ahead for residents there.

Organizations across the nation - including here in kentucky - have been on standby..

Ready to leave at a moments notice to help people impacted by hurricane dorian.

That includes kentucky baptist disaster relief - and as abc36's alexus larson found out - hundreds of volunteers left for the south.... but were stopped mid- way through the trip.

"we're loading up and heading to north carolina.

A group of nine with the ky baptist relief team left friday morning... going south and taking supplies , water , and food ... lots of food.

"we cook with lots of butter.

That's why they like kentucky cooking."

Carolyn hughes has been a volunteer for two years.

Last year, she went to north carolina to help with hurricane damage... and she plans on doing it again.

Her job is to cook meals in this trailer which is a mobile kitchen.

"the cooking team was up every morning by 4am and in bed by maybe 9- 10 o'clock."

Hughes was up before sunrise on friday packing all the food.

"1 down, 10 to go."

Once the packing was done...the team was on their way .... prepared to spend at least two weeks away from home.

They were joined by another eighty or so volunteers from around the state.

"we just kind of look like ants coming in from all over the state."

About three hours into the drive... plans changed.

Smith says they were stopped in tennessee because the damage in north carolina wasn't as bad as expected.

But a change in plans doesn't phase them.

They say it's not uncommon to get ready to leave... only to be told to stand down.

Smith says they will be ready to pack up everything again.... and go.

"you go and people say you know you've been such a blessing and they never realize how we've been blessed."

Reporting in stanford, alexus larson, abc36 news.

C1 3 in the crazniess of it being kentucky's season opener...lost in the mix was the fact it was brad white's first game as defensive coordinator.

White was promoted after matt house left to coach in the n-f-l.

The cats struggled on defense to start giving up 14 points in the first half...7 of that on the first drive of the game, but they would get things fixed and only give up 10 in the second half.

Overall, mark stoops was pleased in white's first game over the defense.

And an actor is making moves for the academy awards.

David daniel has that and more, in the hollywood minute.

--reporter pkg-as follows-- "nicki!"

Nicki minaj is dropping the mic!

The grammy- nominated artist surprised her 20- million twitter followers, tweeting "i've decided to retire and have my family."

Minaj's first solo album reached number one on the billboard 200, and she's had 17 top-10 hits.

"you are a good man."

"black panther" helped make 20-18 a record year for representation.

A university of southern california study of the year's 100 top-grossing movies found 27 had leading characters from historically under-represented racial or ethnic groups... and 39 of those films, including "crazy rich asians," had a female in a leading role.

Both are significant increases over 20-17.

But even as major movies got more inclusive, just one- point-three percent of characters in those films were l- g-b-t-q, and less than two-percent were shown with a disability.

"i think it's great to get nominated.

I think they should just leave it at that."

Oscar winner matt damon has his eye on the academy awards -- in 20-21.

Variety reports, the star's untitiled dramatic thriller has gotten the award-season- friendly release date of november sixth, 20-20.

Damon plays an oil rig worker who travels to france, where his daughter is falsely charged with murder.

The roughneck has to cope with legal and language barriers as he tries to exonerate her.

Sounds like oscar material.
