County... thanks for joining us tonight... a proposed indoor sports complex could possibly be finding a home in an unconventional location.... rock county reporter adam duxter tells us how the janesville mall..
Is providing that opportunity... the janesville mall has lost three major retailers in the last few years... between sears... jc penney..
And the boston store.
Those in the city are seeing all the empty space..
P- 1 vo/mini-disc nat (if you've got something that's drawing people here... they can park right here) as gale price walks the lots of the janesville mall..
(you've got the woodmans store... you've got banks... woodmans headquarters is right there.) he sees opportunity....an d a prime piece of real estate.
1 sot 23 26 20 in college, they teach you location, location, location is everything in real estate.
But when we think about retail, so much of it is driven by traffic.
2 vo/mini-disc but in recent years... the mall has struggled to keep stores open.
And with the closing of sears and boston store this past spring... the prime real estate is becoming more and more empty.
2 sot 22 25 55 it's just extremely important to have a successful mall that is drawing people 22 27 23 what can we do as a city to help the mall and help other businesses continue to be successful?
3 vo/mini-disc turns out... there's some in town that could really use the space.
3 sot 23 22 06 right now, we have little kids practicing hockey at nine or ten o clock at night, our league play for adults goes until midningt.
4 vo/mini-disc at a board meeting thursday night...paul benson and the rest of a special committee voted unaminously... to make the mall the top location for a proposed sports complex... with new rinks..
While it would cost millions to build..
They say the mall is planning on selling them the space... for just one dollar.
4 sot 23 20 13 if we can acquire a site for as close to zero as possible, then we have more money to focus on building the product for the citizens.
4 vo/mini-disc and while it's still a ways away from being a done deal... price is already thinking of the empty space... could turn into a moneymaker for the city.
4 sot 23 31 57 travel is tied to these youth sports teams that travel the country or travel a region for tournaments, contests, whatever that may be.
That provides occupancy in our hotels, they spend money in our restaurants when they go out to eat.
The complex would be built where the former jc penney's stands now..
While the plan itself is still awaiting approval all in all..
It'd cost about 30 million dollars.
There will be a public forum at city hall next wednesday at 6pm..
To get more community feedback.
