Large numbers of suspected migrants are arriving in the UK following days ofhigh winds in the English Channel. Migrants arriving into the UK, after crossing the English Channel, are being processed in what resembles a “rubble-strewn building site”. An inspection of the short-term immigration detention facilities in Dover found that migrants, often arriving wet and cold, “had to spend hours in the open air or in cramped containers”. They were often left with no sleeping facilities or showers. Miles-long queues and traffic on the M20 caused as a result of police rampingup checks at the port of Dover. The enhanced security measures had beenrequested by counter-terrorism police due to "ongoing operational activity".The policing operation has now been stood down and border control checks arereturning to normal, according to police.
