UK opposition Labour to vote on Brexit stance

Britain's Labour Party will on Monday decide between two possible Brexit policies: to campaign to remain in the European Union at a second referendum or defer a decision on what stance to take until after an election, a Labour source said on Sunday.

Michelle Hennessy reports.

Britain's Labour party is headed for a crucial vote on Brexit.

On Monday (September 23), it will get the chance to vote on whether to back the remain camp at a second referendum or defer the decision until after a national election, according to a Reuters Labour source.

The party had expected to produce only one motion for approval in Monday's vote.

The unexpected decision to put two policies forward is highlighting the internal splits over Brexit, in Britain's main opposition party.

Polling shows many voters are confused about what exactly a Labour government would do about Brexit.

The vote could be a test on whether Labour members are now able to reach a consensus.

But it's still possible that both policies could be approved during the vote at the party's annual conference.

A move that would further confuse an already tangled web of Brexit proposals.

Meanwhile, the ruling Conservative party is also looking divided over the issue, with Prime Minister Johnson battling to keep the party together.

Labour is hoping to use the chaos engulfing Johnson's government to win control at an early election, which is expected to be called later this year.

The latest public poll on Saturday (September 21), showed the Conservative party had a comfortable lead over Labour.
