A Dallas jury found former police officer Amber Guyger guilty on Tuesday of murder for shooting a man dead in his own apartment as he ate ice cream.

Guyger had said it was an accident.

Tamara Lindstrom reports.

SOUNDBITE (English) JUDGE TAMMY KEMP, READING: "We the jury unanimously find the defendant Amber Guyger guilty of murder as charged in the indictment." Cries in the courtroom, leading to cheers in the halls of the Dallas courthouse Tuesday where former police officer Amber Guyger was found guilty of murdering her neighbor, Botham Jean, in his own home.

A verdict as shocking to many as the details of the September 2018 killing, when the white Dallas police officer shot and killed Jean, a black 26-year old accountant watching TV in his apartment.

Attorney Lee Merritt spoke on behalf of the victim's family.

SOUNDBITE (English) JEAN FAMILY ATTORNEY LEE MERRITT, SAYING: "It's a sad reality that this community waited on pins an needles to decide whether or not someone could be held guilty for killing an unarmed black man in his home while eating ice cream.

This should have been an automatic.

This should have been anticipated and expected but it is extremely rare." Guyger said she parked on the wrong floor of her complex, leading her to enter Jean's apartment and shoot him.

She said she believed she was in her own apartment, and mistook Jean as an intruder.

Last week Guyger took the stand to defend herself, saying she feared for her life, and was sorry for the mistake.

SOUNDBITE (English) EX-POLICE OFFICER AMBER GUYGER, SAYING: "I feel like a terrible person.

I feel like a piece of crap." Guyger could face a sentence of life in prison.
