"the odds of you or your property being struck by lightning are pretty slim to none, but for one family the odds were not in their favor."

"it was crazy around here."

Dinah and jim martin have lived at this home for a little over two years... and they love it.

Last night - the martin's say jim was watching the weather on t.v.

I knew we had been hit.

We heard the glass break."

The martin's say the strike caused an an explosion in the kitchen.

Firefighters think the lightning hit near their satelitte.

A few minutes later..

They say they started to notice smoke creeping out from outlets around the house.

"i ran and got this hose here and hooked it up and ran in the house with it and was shooting it back behind our gas logs."

The martins say the water, electricity, gas all had to be shut off and they will have to rewire their entire home.

"the wires are burn't in two, you see that?

The whole house looks like that."

The couple says they don't expect to get back into their home for another four to six weeks.

Despite all that - they say they're thankful they and their two dogs made it out safely.

"thankful.

We thank god, we thank god that we're alive.

We thank god that our house is still standing."

With the november election quickly approaching...one group of retired teachers is knocking on doors to start a conversation about democratic duty.

Abc 36's monica harkins talked with them about how pensions and teachers are now an important topic...in the spotlight...this campaign season.

#### "walking feet sounds" canvassin neighborhoods is a normal part of a campaign.

Retired teachers...claire batt and denise finley say they knock on doors "knock sound" to start conversations...a favorite topic of their's is undoubtedly education.

Claire batt: " it's not surprising that we have a movement."

For many people....pensions are a topic that quickly comes to mind because of protests at the capitol.

"nat pop from protest" but finley and batt say voters should also be thinking about funding cuts, school choice, and teacher pay.

Finley says she's been a life long republican... but she estimates teachers don't just fall into one party.

"teachers are 50% democrat, 50% republican i don't think a lot of people know that."

Now, she's crossing party lines because she believes in the power of communication.

"i want people that are willing to communicate with each other despite political party.

That's the way our world should be.

We should be talking and solving problems."

Several teachers are voicing support for attorney general andy beshear...saying he's stood by them as governor matt bevin has hurt their interests...and called them selfish...and ignorant.

The governor's campaign says it's already been solving education problems. "matt bevin is the first governor ever to fully fund the kentucky pension system."

And he also draws on his family ties in this ad in attempt to appeal to teachers... "i look at people like my grandmother who retired after a career in public education."

Finley says while it's niceto be thought about in the election... teachers shouldn't be the focus.

"i don't like being pigeon holed just as it's a teacher issue.

We just happen to be the ones that went up there."

Batt says at the end of the day what's most important is not who you vote for... but that you vote.

Claire "having a voice in your government is important."

A voice you can use...november 5th.

And as karen travers reports... even top republicans are criticizing the move.

L3: world view white trump announces total withdrawal from syria l3: world view white karen travers abc news o/c top: swift and strong criticism of the surprise announcement by the trump administration that it was pulling back us troops from northern syria...even close allies of the president said this is a mistake.

-start broll- president trump is forcefully defending his decision to pull back us troops from northern syria and a move that could greenlight a military operation by turkey to clear out us- backed kurdish forces there.

Trump sot: turkey syria let them take care of it let them take care of it we want to bring our troops back home syrian kurdish forces have been america's strongest ally in the fight against isis.

They're also guarding around 10,000 isis fighters who have been captured there?but the white house now says turkey will take charge of those prisoners.

The commanding general of the syrian democratic forces telling abc news the announcement came as a surprise..and even if the president changes course, it will be hard to rebuild trust.

Verbatim: americans don't abide their commitments towards troops and they abandoned us in the middle of struggle against isis.

The announcement sparked fierce - bipartisan - backlash.

House speaker nancy pelosi calling the move "reckless" and "misguided" senate majority leader mitch mcconnell urging the president to "exercise american leadership."

The trump administration is scrambling... the pentagon today insisted the us does not endorse a turkish operation in northern syria.

The state department downplaying the move?saying it is only dozens of us troops and it's a necessary to get them out of potential harms way -end broll- o/c close: president trump on twitter issued a warning to turkey that if it does anything he considers to be "off limits"?he will "totally destroy and obliterate" its economy - he did not say how.

C1 3 inquiry into president trump.

The attorney representing the whistleblower at the center of all this now says... he is representing a second whistleblower.

And as mona kosar abdi reports... house democrats are now issuing subpoenas for information about military aid to ukraine.

L3: nation view white second whistleblower in impeachment inquiry l3: nation view white second whistleblower in impeachment inquiry l3: nation view white second whistleblower in impeachment inquiry today - a major development in the impeachment inquiry against president trump-- house democrats issuing a new pair of subpoenas -this time to the heads of the defense department and the office of management and budget.

In a letter - the house chairs requested information regarding the trump administration's decision to delay military aid to ukraine.

Writing the documents are necessary " to examine this sequence of these events and the reasons behind the white house's decision" the request comes as a second whistle blower has now emerged.

Sot - adam schiff: "we are tremendously dependent on people of courage stepping forward."

The unnamed member of the intelligence community claims to have first-hand information about the president's efforts to push ukraine to investigate his political rival: joe biden and his son.

Trump: the impeachment inquiry is a scam.

A request the president again made publicly just days ago--this time also calling on china to investigate biden.

Today ohio senator rob portman became the latest republicans to publicly criticize the president portman saying "the president should not have raised the biden issue on that call, period.

It's not appropriate for a president to engage a foreign government in an investigation of a political opponent."

While others in the party say he was clearly joking meanwhile senator lindsey graham is putting the pressure back on the whistleblowers saying trump should be able to confront his accusers.

Sot - lindsey graham: "if the whistleblowers' allegations are turned into an impeachment article it's imperative that the whistleblower be interviewed in public, under oath, and cross-examined," sources tell abc news democrats have discussed ways to mask the original whistle blowers identity during a potential hill testimony.
