British lawmakers back Brexit deal delay

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Saturday he would not negotiate a delay to Brexit, after lawmakers backed a proposal to withhold approval for his agreement until formal ratification legislation has passed.

Edward Baran reports.

Sitting on a Saturday for the first time in decades, British lawmakers were supposed to be voting on Boris Johnson's last-minute Brexit divorce deal.

But now they've backed an amendment which will defer the decision - meaning there will be no vote on the deal this weekend.

This was the response from Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, BORIS JOHNSON, SAYING: "I will not negotiate a delay with the EU and neither does the law compel me to do so.

I will tell our friends and colleagues in the EU exactly what I have told everyone in the last 88 days that further delay would be bad for this country." Conservative lawmaker Oliver Letwin was responsible for denying Prime Minister Boris Johnson his day of Brexit glory .

He brought forward the idea of yet another delay.

The battle over Brexit also spilled onto the streets of London.

Where tens of thousands had gathered to demand a new referendum.

Protests in Poland against strict abortion law

On Friday protesters marched through many cities in Poland, after a top court declared it illegal to abort in cases of foetal malformation, because it is considered “incompatible” with the Polish constitution. 98% of legal abortions in the country in 2019 were carried out because of foetal abnormalities. Now, women in Poland are only allowed to terminate their pregnancy in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s health is at risk. Opposition parties in Poland, the European Union's human rights commissioner and international human rights organisations criticized the court's decision as violating women's rights.
