'We heard screams': Swedish nurses who saved British man bitten by shark

A Swedish couple recounted to journalists on Wednesday (October 30) the critical moment when they saved the lives of two British tourists following a shark attack, one of whom had a foot bitten off.

Emily Wither reports.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SWEDISH NURSE EMMA ANDERSSON SAYING: "I was halfway up the ladder I think when I heard the first scream." A Swedish couple have recounted that critical moment when they saved the lives of two British tourists following a shark attack in Australia.

One of them had their foot bitten off.

The couple are nurses and were on a snorkelling trip off Whitsunday Islands when they heard screams as they were climbing back into their boat.

When the two injured men were brought aboard, the Billy and Emma jumped in to action.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SWEDISH NURSE BILLY LUDVIGSSON SAYING: "We had to make like a makeshift tourniquet with ropes and towels to stop the bleeding.

The bleeding was severe, life-threatening at first, but we managed to stop the bleeding, pretty fast actually, like in a couple of minutes I don't know actually, five minutes." The two victims were out of surgery and recovering on Wednesday.

The local tourism body has urged immediate government funding for daily air surveillance in specific bays to watch out for sharks.

It comes after five shark attacks in the Whitsundays over the past year, one of them deadly.

But despite the ordeal the Brits kept their sense of humour.

Apparently cracking jokes as the boat sped back to shore.
