3 after the founder of america's cajun navy was accused of stealing fundraising money from foster children... another group under a similar name here in louisiana is looking to make changes.

"cajun navy 20-16" now calls themselves "pinnacle search and rescue."

Their spokesman told news15 that the name change has been in the works for months but with the arrest of the founder of america's cajun navy, they said they had to make the change sooner rather than later.

News 15's phillip boudreaux has the story... 3 3 "the doors was being closed on us from doing god's work from what we are called to do."ever since 2016, pinnacle search and rescue, formerly known as cajun navy 2016, only sought out to rescue the helpless in times of natural disaster, but, ben husser, pinnacle spokesman says that became more difficult as time went on.

"places that we'd left with hugs and smiles and kisses and open arms. we were being told that we weren't welcome back there again.

Not because of us, but because of the cajun navy name."tom bever, the founder of cajun navy wikileaks, says some of these organizations have done questionable things"these people are going through a disaster.

They've just lost everything, lost their homes, lost their house, lost their pets, some have even lost family member and these guys are coming and saying, take a picture on our boat and post it all over social media.

A lot of people don't want these memories out there public."

Husser, pinnacle spokesman, felt it was necessary for their organization to set themselves apart"the cajun navy was a movement.

It was a call for action.

It was about neighbors helping and i think we've gotten away from that with the name."their new name was inspired their christian faith, and they decided to take the leap "i think it was humbling decision to say as an organization to say, you know this god's way of telling us that we need to step away from a name and put his name first in what we do."

Pinnacle search and rescue also recently launched its drone division to help in their search and rescue missions during natural disasters.

The secretary of state's website shows at least six groups with variations on the name "cajun navy" registered with the state and pinnacle search and rescue says they are registered as a "501-c3" 3 the lafayette police department is warning residents to be aware when using an a-t-m machine.the department has investigated several recent cases of what's known as "jugging" which is when a thief witnesses someone withdraw money, follows them to their destination and then breaks into their vehicle to steal the money.

For more information on those vehicle burglaries as well as surveillance pictures, you can visit our website at k-a-d-n dot com.

3 two state district-court judges are scheduled to hear motions beginning tomorrow in the iberia district attorney's bid to have district judge lori landry thrown off more than three-hundred cases.

The d-a's office argues that landry, who is african- american, is biased against the office and has publicly criticized the high rate of prosecutions against african- american defendants in iberia parish.

The hearing has been postponed twice ... and on both occasions dozens of residents turned out in support of landry.

And if you're watching from "jenna-rett" this morning, here's a little heads-up...the city will begin flushing the water system and hydrants today through friday between the hours of seven a-m and five p-m.

If you experience a drop in water pressure or have discolored water ... the city is recommending that you open your faucets until the water runs clean and avoid doing laundry when the pressure is low.

3 a safety alert for you and your pets this morning... reports are going around facebook that a coyote has been spotted in lafayette.

This is a screenshot from a video posted to facebook by william meaux who spotted the coyote in broad daylight while driving in his car.

The video was taken near the intersection of dulles drive and bertrand drive as the coyote was walking through a grassy area.

Animal control reminds the public to watch their small pets as coyotes will see them as potential prey and they have also been known to approach humans.

If you come into contact with a coyote... loud noises should deter the animal but take extreme caution and notify animal control of its location immediately.

3 and in the community... united way of acadiana early head start, in partnership with news 15, wants to ensure that the children and families do not go hungry this holiday season.

And through the collection of non-perishable food items, we hope to provide each family with the essentials needed for a traditional thanksgiving meal and bring a community together.

If you want to donate non- perishable food items, drop-off locations are at the united way of acadiana or right here at news 15.

There is also an amazon wishlist for the drive that can be viewed on united way of acadiana dot com.and if you're interested in making a donation or holding an internal drive at your workplace... you can visit k-a-d-n dot com for more information.

Halloween is only a couple days away and according to the national retail federation... we spend a lot of money on the holiday!

That's right, consumers are expected to shell out three-point-two billion dollars on costumes, two-point- six billion dollars on candy, and three-hundred and ninety million dollars on greeting cards.

A total of one- hundred and seventy-two million people plan to celebrate halloween this week.

And speaking of spending money for halloween... dressing up pets might seem absurd to some, but it's grown in popularity over the years.

According to the national retail federation, buying costumes for pets has become big business that seventeen percent of owners plan to dress up their pooches.

This year... total planned spending for pet costumes comes in at four-hundred and ninety million dollars which is more than double what it was in 20-10.
